How To Prepare Your CV

Looking through the Connect Appointment’s website you’ll see we currently have countless opportunities available across Scotland and the north of England.

Maybe you’ve found the role for you – if so, the next step is to submit your CV. But how do you ensure that your CV is picked up for an interview? We let you in on some of Connect’s top CV tips.

LENGTH

Our consultants receive a wealth of CVs for roles on a daily basis, so your CV should never exceed two pages: you’ll have to decide what the most important information to include is.

Lead with your personal details and contact information, your previous employment (with most recent role at the top), your education history and any qualifications you have, with any interests, hobbies, or additional information at the bottom.

EMPLOYMENT HISTORY

Keeping your employment history short is a great way to keep the length down and demonstrate your ability to prioritise.

Think about the role you’re applying for and how your previous jobs relate to it – you don’t have to include your role as a checkout assistant when you were 16 if you’re applying for a production job.

Include your most recent positions alongside a summary of previous, less relevant roles at the bottom, and the skills you picked up while working in them.

If you’re invited to an assessment or one of our consultants calls you for an informal chat, you can expand upon your previous work history and explain any gaps in your CV at that stage. Highlighting your most relevant skills and experience is the top way to catch the recruiter’s eye.

UNIQUE

Your CV has to be unique, to separate it from everyone else’s. Use bullet points, headings, bold and italics to break up your CV and make it easier for recruiters to read.

With that being said, you still want your CV to be professional, so it’s a good idea to use the Arial or Calibri fonts – no Comic Sans!

Why not include your achievements in your employment history, or highlight what you’re most proud of doing during your time with a company? This is not only a different way of demonstrating your skills, but also showcases your strengths and how you’ll be an asset to your next employer.

Include any targets met, any awards won or any new methods or initiatives you implemented during your employment with previous companies, to highlight why you’re the right person for the role you’re applying for.

And of course, read over your CV before submitting it – a missing dot in your email address or a seven instead of an eight in your phone number could be the difference between your next job, or not hearing back.

So, now you know what we’re looking for, it’s time to press that ‘Apply’ button and send your CV to one of our expert consultants. We look forward to getting connected.
